A major UK deep-sea terminal has expanded its capacity with four additional cranes.
Liverpool2 is a £400 million project by the Peel Ports Group to create one of the most advanced terminals for container vessels in Europe. And four new operational cantilever rail-mounted gantry (CRMG) cranes have now been added, opening up an extra 15 acres of yard capacity.
There is currently a huge demand for global shipping and ports need to maximise their capacity to cope with all the goods which need to pass through. Disruption to international supply chains over the last 18 months, fuelled by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Suez Canal blockage, has driven up shipping costs and caused supply shortages and delays to customers receiving their orders.
Liverpool2 is part of the Port of Liverpool – the UK’s biggest transatlantic port and a vital link between Europe and the United States. It is the country’s only west-facing deep sea terminal and when it is complete, it will make it easier for global shipping companies to import and export goods from and to the UK.
This will help support increased demand for goods and allow companies to have ‘ship to door’ access to major import and export centres within the UK.
Development will increase productivity
The expansion is part of a partnership between Peel Ports Group and the global terminal business- Terminal Investment Limited Sarl (TiL). There are already 12 CRMGs and eight ship-to-shore cranes at Liverpool2 and the additional four CRMGs will improve productivity and increase efficiency.
David Huck, Peel Ports managing director, said: “This significant project milestone demonstrates our continued investment in our customers and response to the Port of Liverpool’s growth trajectory as we increase our capacity and market share further.”
He added: “The Port of Liverpool’s strategic location provides reliable access to major import and export centres at the heart of the UK, and an unrivalled connectivity to Ireland via our Irish Sea Hub.”
The next stage of the project will see another six CRMGs come online, which will add another five acres of yard capacity.
The expansion will create more than 150 jobs for skilled workers in Merseyside to add to the 90 employees who have been recruited, trained and deployed in 2021 so far.
